Why Build It So High? And Why It Still Wasn't High Enough
Yeongdo is an island, and the whole district is basically one island. With only a few bridges, it couldn't handle all the cars, and traffic jams covered the whole island, so new bridges were planned.
But this bridge crosses the main harbor, where huge container ships and cruise ships come in, so it had to be tall. The original design was even higher, high enough for giant cruise ships to pass easily. But during construction, the clearance was lowered to 60 meters, and the biggest cruise ships couldn't get under it. Local people and the media criticized it for years, and some giant cruise ships couldn't use Busan's new cruise terminal inside the harbor and had to dock at the Yeongdo cruise terminal outside the bridge instead. (Source: Namu Wiki) The fix came in January 2017, when the height limit for ships passing under was raised to 63 meters, so giant cruise ships could finally go through.
The Spiral Ramp That Scares Drivers
The bridge is so high, and Yeongdo has so little space for a long ramp, that engineers built Korea's first loop-shaped access ramp on the Yeongdo side. Cars drive around in a circle to climb up to the bridge. On a Korean TV variety show, comedian Park Myeong-su got scared on this ramp and said it felt like floating in the sky. (Source: Namu Wiki)
A Fight Over the Name
During planning it was called "Bukhang Bridge," which means North Port Bridge. Then the naming committee wanted a name that represented all of Busan, so they tried to take the name "Busan Bridge" from an existing bridge and give it to this one. Yeongdo residents pushed back, so they reviewed it again and chose "Busan Harbor Bridge." The funny part is that the old Yeongdo Bridge, from 1934, was originally officially named Busan Bridge too, and it lost that name when the current Busan Bridge opened. (Source: Namu Wiki)
What It Did for Busan
It cost 538.4 billion won, about 385 million US dollars (estimated at about 1,400 won per dollar). With this bridge, drivers can go from Haeundae to Yeongdo, Songdo, Gadeok Island and Geoje without going through the crowded downtown, using a 52 km coastal ring road from Gwangan Bridge to Geoga Bridge.
How to Enjoy It
The best way is at night, when the bridge lights up. If you take the ferry to Japan from Busan Port International Passenger Terminal, you pass right under it. You can also cross it on city bus 1011, which has used the bridge since November 28, 2015.
Here is a fun, secret story that only locals really know about this bridge. Among the people of Busan, we jokingly call this specific spiral ramp the "graveyard for beginner drivers"!
- As you can see out the window, this road is literally floating in the empty air directly above the ocean.
- Because of this terrifying height, combined with the incredibly steep incline and the sharp, continuous curve, it is famously known as the most frightening road for new drivers in the entire city.
- The cause of this fear is the extreme engineering we just talked about, and the effect is pure, overwhelming panic for anyone who isn't a confident driver!
- In fact, there are actual, unbelievable episodes where beginner drivers drove halfway up this curve and completely froze in terror.
- They were so scared that they hit the brakes, stopped their cars right in the middle of the ramp, and called the police, begging the officers to come and drive their cars down for them!
